Welcome

Welcome to the Australian Hovercraft Association where we fly for fun!

With members based all around Australia recreational hovercraft flying is what we do best, with a variety of different craft on the water from commercial makes to home built crafts there is something for everyone.

People began experimenting with hovercraft in Australia soon after Sir Christopher Cockerell’s epic crossing of the English Channel in 1959. Such was Australia’s interest in this new technology that the world’s first hovercraft race was held on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra in 1964.

It was not surprising then that hovercraft clubs began to develop when likeminded people discovered each other. This led to state clubs discovering each other also and in time the first of many national meets.

The first official national rally or `Oz Hover’ was held in January 1985 at Lake Hindmarsh in Victoria. These became an annual event and were held Australia Day long weekend. Over time the date and frequency changed to be a bi-annual event held in September. What did not change however was the enjoyment and celebration of hovercraft, the sharing of ideas, progress and new builds and the fun and social atmosphere of the event.
