Queensland Sporting Hovercraft Club
A branch of the AUSTRALIAN HOVERCRAFT FEDERATION Inc (Vic)
Dear Air Cushion Vehicle enthusiast,
The Queensland branch of The Australian Hovercraft Federation held a planning meeting on
Tuesday, 17th August 2010, in Room 15 - Our Lady of Fatima RC primary school, 350 Mortimer Road
Acacia Ridge. This meeting was attended by:-
Phillip Audsley, Angus Kerr, Dale Baxter and Steven Odgaard.
Cruise report - Muriel Street, Redland Bay, Saturday 7th August 2010.
The last club cruise was held on Saturday 7th August 2010 from 96 Muriel Street, Redland Bay
courtesy of Peter Venn. Those attending the cruise were:-
Peter Venn - Turbo TP6 powered by a Subaru 1800 & Honda twin cylinder.
Arthur Stead - Revtech Renegade powered by a 20hp Honda 2 cylinder.
Des Goss - Turbo Wedge 225 powered by a Robin EC44.
Steven Odgaard - Billy Baker 2 powered by a 44hp Chaparral engine.
Visitors attending the cruise included:-
Peter and Sue Morgan from New Zealand and
Barrie Callaghan from Currumbin.
Peter and Sue Morgan own a HovPod in the North Island town of Wanganui and are visiting
Brisbane from Sunday 1st August through to Thursday 12th August.
Barrie Callaghan is from the Currumbin Volunteer Marine Rescue and he has been stirring up
some interest in the study of ACVs as response vessels to boats running aground in the silted
mouth of the Currumbin bar.
Peter Venn started the day by taking Barrie Callaghan for a run around Lagoon Island to give him
an idea of the potential use of hovercraft in the Currumbin Creek area on the Gold Coast. As
Barrie only had a limited amount of time available he was unable to stay for the cruise.
Peter Morgan and Steven Odgaard travelled with Peter Venn in the Turbo TP6 for a cruise north to
Coochimudlo Island. Arthur Stead in a Revtech Renegade and Des Goss in a Turbo Wedge 225
followed us, and we all had morning tea at the milkbar on the corner of Victoria Parade and
Elizabeth Street, just across the parklands from the jetty and ferry terminal. On the return trip to
Muriel Street we made a stopover at the western end of Karragarra Island.
Steven gave the Billy Baker 2 a short run in the Lagoon Passage after the main cruise was over.
The 1 litre gravity feed fuel tank on the lift engine allowed the craft to cruise in the passage for
only about 5 minutes before refueling was necessary. A change of carburettor design is needed
to sustain fuel pump pressure from the main rear mounted fuel tank. The Mikuni carburettor float
valves seem to leak when subjected to the vibration of a vertical shaft engine.
Thanks to the ladies, Elaine Venn, Judy Stead and Sue Morgan for helping to prepare the
delightful lunch at the end of the club day out.
